Aim How important are frequent, low‐intensity disturbances to tree community dynamics of a cyclone‐prone forest? We tested the following hypotheses concerning the ‘inter‐cataclysm’ period on a remote Polynesian island: (1) tree turnover would be high and recruitment rates would be significantly higher than mortality; (2) low‐intensity disturbance would result in a marginal increase in tree mortality in the short term; (3) turnover would vary among species and would be associated with plant traits linked to differences in life history; and (4) mortality and recruitment events would be spatially non‐random. Location Tutuila, a volcanic island in the Samoan Archipelago, Polynesia. Methods We censused the tree (stem diameter ≥ 10 cm) community in 3.9 ha of tropical forest three times over a 10‐year period, 1998–2008. We calculated annual mortality, recruitment and turnover rates for 36 tree species. We tested for non‐random spatial patterns and predictors of mortality, and non‐random spatial patterns of tree recruitment. A 2004 cyclone passing within 400 km allowed us to measure the effects of a non‐cataclysmic disturbance on vital rates. Results Annual turnover was 2.8% and annual recruitment was 3.6%; these are some of the highest rates in the tropics, and likely to be a response to a cyclone that passed < 50 km from Tutuila in 1991. Species turnover rates over 10 years were negatively correlated with wood specific gravity, and positively correlated with annual stem diameter increment. Mortality was spatially aggregated, and a function of site, species and an individual’s growth rate. Recruitment was highest on ground with low slope. The low‐magnitude cyclone disturbance in 2004 defoliated 29% of all trees, but killed only 1.8% of trees immediately and increased annual mortality over 5 years by 0.7%. Main conclusions The inter‐cataclysm period on Tutuila is characterized by frequent, low‐amplitude disturbances that promote high rates of tree recruitment and create a dynamic, non‐equilibrium or disturbed island disequilibrium tree community. Species with low wood density and fast growth rates have enhanced opportunities for recruitment between cataclysms, but also higher probabilities of dying. Our results suggest that increases in the frequency of cyclone activity could shift relative abundances towards disturbance‐specialist species and new forest turnover rates.  相似文献

Litter quality in a north European transect versus carbon storage potential   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Berg  Björn  Meentemeyer  Vernon 《Plant and Soil》2002,242(1):83-92
Newly shed foliar plant litter often has a decomposition rate of ca 0.1–0.2% day–1, which decreases greatly with time and may reach 0.0001 to 0.00001% day–1 or lower in litter material in the last stages of decay. The decrease in decomposability (substrate quality) varies among species and is complex, involving both direct chemical changes in the substrate itself and the succession in microorganisms able to compete for substrate with a given chemical composition. In late stages, the decomposition appears very little affected by climate, suggesting that climate change will have little effect on late-stages decomposition rates. Here, we apply a model for the late stages of litter decomposition to address the question of climate-change effects on soil-C storage. Decomposition of litter turning into soil organic matter (SOM) is determined by the degradation rate of lignin. In the last phases of decay, raised N concentrations have a rate-retarding effect on lignin degradation and thus on the decomposition of far-decomposed litter and litter in near-humus stages. The retardation of the decomposition rate in late stages may be so strong that decomposition reaches a limit value at which total mass losses virtually stop. At such a stage the remaining litter would be close to that of stabilized SOM. The estimated limit values for different species range from about 45 to 100% decomposition indicating that between 0 and 55% should either be stabilized or decompose extremely slowly. For no less than 106 long-term studies on litter decomposition, encompassing 21 litter types, limit values were significantly and negatively related to N concentration, meaning that the higher the N concentration in the newly shed litter (the lower the C/N ratio) the more litter was left when it reached its limit value. Trees growing under warmer and wetter climates (higher actual evapotranspiration, AET) tend to shed foliar litter more rich in N than those growing under colder and drier climates. A change in climate resulting in higher AET would thus mean that within species, e.g., Scots pine, a higher N level in the foliar litter may result. Further, within the boreal system deciduous species appear to have foliar litter richer in N than have conifers and within the conifers group, Norway spruce has needle litter more rich in N than, e.g., Scots pine. Thus, a change of species (e.g., by planting) from pine to spruce or from spruce to a deciduous species such as birch may result in a higher N level in the litter fall at a given site. In both cases the result would be a lower limit value for decomposition. The paper presents an hypothesis, largely based on available data that a change in climate of 4° higher annual average temperature and 40% higher precipitation in the Baltic basin would result in higher N levels in litter, lower decomposition and thus a considerable increase in humus accumulation.  相似文献

Ecosystem functioning is simultaneously affected by changes in community composition and environmental change such as increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and subsequent ocean acidification. However, it largely remains uncertain how the effects of these factors compare to each other. Addressing this question, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that initial community composition and elevated CO2 are equally important to the regulation of phytoplankton biomass. We full‐factorially exposed three compositionally different marine phytoplankton communities to two different CO2 levels and examined the effects and relative importance (ω2) of the two factors and their interaction on phytoplankton biomass at bloom peak. The results showed that initial community composition had a significantly greater impact than elevated CO2 on phytoplankton biomass, which varied largely among communities. We suggest that the different initial ratios between cyanobacteria, diatoms, and dinoflagellates might be the key for the varying competitive and thus functional outcome among communities. Furthermore, the results showed that depending on initial community composition elevated CO2 selected for larger sized diatoms, which led to increased total phytoplankton biomass. This study highlights the relevance of initial community composition, which strongly drives the functional outcome, when assessing impacts of climate change on ecosystem functioning. In particular, the increase in phytoplankton biomass driven by the gain of larger sized diatoms in response to elevated CO2 potentially has strong implications for nutrient cycling and carbon export in future oceans.  相似文献

Plants of the nickel-hyperaccumulator Alyssum bertolonii Desv. and of the non-accumulator A. montanum L. growing on a serpentine site in Tuscany, Italy, and plants of A. montanum from a nearby non-serpentine site were analysed for metal concentration and localisation. The leaves of A. bertolonii contained 160 times more nickel than those of A. montanum from the same site, thus demonstrating its hyperaccumulation capacity towards this metal. On the other hand, both species showed an inversion of the Ca/Mg ratio in their organs relative to the soil. Nickel localisation in plant tissues was examined by Scanning Electron Microanalysis (SEM/EDX). In A. bertolonii, a specific pattern of nickel distribution was detected, with the highest concentrations present in parenchyma and sclerenchyma cells for the roots; in the shoots, the highest amounts of nickel were found in the stem epidermis, the leaf epidermal surface, and the leaf trichome base. This particular nickel tissue distribution pattern was not found in the non-accumulator A. montanum growing on serpentine soil. Other mineral nutrients, namely Mg, Ca, K, Fe, instead, had a similar distribution in the two species. The A. montanum plants from the non-serpentine site had very low nickel levels in their tissues, and these were of the same magnitude as those found in A. bertolonii plants grown in a greenhouse on commercial horticultural soil with low nickel concentration. In A. bertolonii plants, the tissue-specific allocation patterns appeared to depend on the degree of nickel hyperaccumulation, which is, in turn, directly linked to the soil characteristics.  相似文献

Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the density of single proteins and its temperature dependence was modelled starting from the experimentally determined protein structure and a generic, transferable force field, without the need of prior parameterization. Although all proteins consist of the same 20 amino acids, their density in aqueous solution varies up to 10% and the thermal expansion coefficient up to twofold. To model the protein density, systematic MD simulations were carried out for 10 proteins with a broad range of densities (1.32–1.43?g/cm3) and molecular weights (7–97?kDa). The simulated densities deviated by less than 1.4% from their experimental values that were available for four proteins. Further analyses of protein density showed that it can be essentially described as a consequence of amino acid composition. For five proteins, the density was simulated at different temperatures. The simulated thermal expansion coefficients ranged between 4.3 and 7.1?×?10?4?K?1 and were similar to the experimentally determined values of ribonuclease-A and lysozyme (deviations of 2.4 and 14.6%, respectively). Further analyses indicated that the thermal expansion coefficient is linked to the temperature dependence of atomic fluctuations: proteins with a high thermal expansion coefficient show a low increase in flexibility at increasing temperature. A low increase in atomic fluctuations with temperature has been previously described as a possible mechanism of thermostability. Thus, a high thermal expansion coefficient might contribute to protein thermostability.  相似文献

Explaining the causes of geographic gradients in biodiversity remains an elusive task. Traditionally, correlative approaches have been used to relate species richness with contemporary climate, without actually explaining the causal factors. Recent approaches propose simulation models as more appropriate tools for assessing potential causes of macroecological patterns. Here we developed stochastic models to assess the relative contribution of climate and niche conservatism in determining compositional similarity among sites (co-diversity) and geographic association among species (co-distribution) in the bat family Phyllostomidae. We used range-diversity plots and variance-ratio tests to describe and evaluate such patterns. Our results supported a strong effect of climate in determining cohesive ranges causing positive co-diversity and co-distribution. We also demonstrated a marginal effect of niche conservatism, as modeled here, among species in shaping these patterns. However, climate and niche conservatism are not sufficient and other processes are still required to explain observed patterns. Our study highlights the importance of historical processes and demonstrates the usefulness of a simulation framework in testing biogeographical hypothesis to understand the relationship between diversity and distribution.  相似文献

Large lipid transfer proteins are involved in lipid transportation and diverse other molecular processes. These serum proteins include vitellogenins, which are egg yolk precursors and pathogen pattern recognition receptors, and apolipoprotein B, which is an anti-inflammatory cholesterol carrier. In the honey bee, vitellogenin acts as an antioxidant, and elevated vitellogenin titer is linked to prolonged life span in this animal. Here, we show that vitellogenin has cell and membrane binding activity and that it binds preferentially to dead and damaged cells. Vitellogenin binds directly to phosphatidylcholine liposomes and with higher affinity to liposomes containing phosphatidylserine, a lipid of the inner leaflet of cell membranes that is exposed in damaged cells. Vitellogenin binding to live cells, furthermore, improves cell oxidative stress tolerance. This study can shed more light on why large lipid transfer proteins have a well conserved α-helical domain, because we locate the lipid bilayer-binding ability of vitellogenin largely to this region. We suggest that recognition of cell damage and oxidation shield properties are two mechanisms that allow vitellogenin to extend honey bee life span.  相似文献
